Doesn’t Europe have to stay ahead of China and the US?

It depends what is more important, economic growth and technological prowess or human flourishing. If we reduce human flourishing to economic prosperity and all that it confers, then humanity will be impoverished in terms of rights such as freedom and privacy, dignity, justice. Would we rather be poorer but freer and happier, or economically richer but a dumbed down human being.
Robbing humanity
It is important that our emotional and mental cultural environment not rob humanity of the things so important to humanity itself such as beauty, wonder, and creativity—things that give pleasure, meaning, and delight without which a human being will cease to be a human being. It will not matter how efficient and convenient life becomes if the human being loses the very things essential to flourishing as a human being.
